Autumn is such a wonderful time of year and not only for gardeners. We are rewarded with gorgeous sunny days, misty mornings and the fabulous yellows and oranges of nature. The amazing hues and tints of autumn can be breath taking. Now is the time to get planting! The soil is still warm but also moist from the morning dew and more regular rain. This encourages roots to get established before the cooler months creep in.
In your edible garden plant seedlings of cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, beetroot, winter lettuce, parsley, chives, rosemary and more – you’ll be eating tasty home grown produce all winter long! However, if you’re not using your vege patch over winter, sow some blue lupin or mustard seed – it’s an easy and natural way to add nutrients and improve your soil structure for spring.
Autumn is also an important time for lawn care. Lawns can be the most underappreciated part of your garden but now is the best time to with prepare your lawn for the winter months ahead and ensure that it is looking its best come spring.

With the days getting shorter and the nights getting colder, autumn is also the ideal time to start looking after the birds in your garden. Regular feeding is a simple way to increase the number of birds in your garden and provides entertainment for the whole family. It also provides birds with a regular food source over the cold months when food can be scarce. Attracting wild birds into your garden will also encourage them to search for common garden pests such as caterpillars and snails to eat – a fantastic benefit for all gardeners!
