I have a builtup vegetable garden growing garlic, lettuce dwarf beans, silverbeet and bootroot – I am having trouble with ants in a big way with masses of black aphids on the garlic leaves and lettuce leaves – which would be the best way of erradicating these. I have tried sprinkling granules of ant killer around the garden as I know these encourage aphids. Hoping you can help.

Ants won’t be damaging the plants – that would be the aphids – it is the aphids that are attracting the ants. Ants can be controlled by products such as Neverong which you place in small containers around the garden – the ants take the poison back to the nest. Also, you would be best to eliminate the aphids. There are a number of insecticides available in store to get rid of the aphids – you can even squirt them off with the hose (you’d need to do it regularly) or spray them with a teaspoon of detergent mixed in 500mls water.
