We’ve just moved into a house with an old rose garden, it’s beautiful but the weeds are out of control. We’ve also just changed the carpet, removing an old woollen carpet. Can we use the old carpet as weed matting in the rose garden??

Hi Lyrese, In theory yes you can, one concern would be the time it takes carpet to breakdown and if this has any effect on the ability of the soil to breath, secondly the unknown effect (if any) of any chemicals leaching from this carpet (if any chemicals have been used in the manufacturing process).
If you do decide to use this, my suggestion would be to only use a single layer and cover this with a good layer of mulch i.e. fine bark compost or similar. To ensure you keep up the health of the roses I would spray the roses alternative weeks. One week with Free flow Copper and Enspray Oil the second week with an organic liquid fertiliser (Garden Booster, Biofeed Compost Tea or Seaweed fertiliser for example) This way your Roses should maintain their health. Thanks the Palmers Team
