Some one said they may have the same virus as kiwi fruit get.Can you please help. Is there a spray for them. They are about 8 years old. Thanks

Hi Shona

Yes we have had quite a few cases of this in New Zealand recently and it is generally drought or phytophthora that causes them to die back. Keep your hedge watered over summer but be sure not to overwater as this is a fungal disease and inadequate drainage can also be a problem. They are a coastal loving plant so can cope with dry weather but not for extended periods.

You may be thinking of the disease phytophthora which is a fungal disease that causes these symptoms and can cause a shrub to blacken within weeks. Carefully remove and dispose of infected plants. Remove and dispose of surrounding soil. When replanting with new plants be sure to provide adequate air movement and drainage.
