My small lawn 70 sq m. has high maintenance (watering, fertilizer, mowing, weeds etc) rye grass. I am looking for low maintenance hardy stuff. Please suggest alternatives and where to obtain it? Friend has suggested mercury bay?

Mercury bay weed or Dicondra Repens Native is one lawn option. It grows in sun or part shade and thrives on little moisture. Dicondra is resistant to some herbicides making establishment easy. Grows 1-3cm high. Moderate-heavy traffic. Excellent between paving stones and is shallow rooted so does not compete well with shrubs and trees. No maintenance required around tree trunks and rocks etc opening up for huge landscape variations. Sellerio rodicons microphyllo is another option. It is a NZ native, it is commonly called fine tide turf and is a tidal estuary plant so its happy being temporarily soaked or left bone dry. It has a very grassy look and glossy leaves that are cool to sit upon. Talk to your local Palmers Garden Centre regarding supply.
