How can we kill NZ Flax? We have a flax bush in an area where we don’t want. We can’t dig it out because its too difficult to get to. We just want it removed but it wont budge.

Flax are real survivors and have a fantastic fibrous root system which hinders digging out the entire plant. I would cut all top foliage off to start with. A sharp machete would be best. Remove all the leaf spears so that the root ball is exposed. Now choose between spraying new emerging growth with Activated Amitrol (follow the directions on the bottle) or try covering with thick sheets of plastic held down by concrete blocks. You will need to cover well out past the circumference of the root zone and leave in place for a long period of time to have any chance of this method succeeding.
