I’m looking to put in a lavender hedge both sides of our footpath to highlight the entrance to our house, can you recommend a suitable lavender plant that is suited to a Wellington south coast garden (the path runs east-west and gets good sun). We want a hedge about 40-50cm high when fully grown and a good flowering variety as well. Any recommendations please?

Lavender Dentata is always a good one for Wellington but you will need to prune it. Another is Lavandula angustifolia which won’t need the pruning to keep the height down and will grow to the height you wish but as with any lavender a good trim every 6 months, reducing 1/3 of the plant size will stop it from going woody and will keep deadheading under control.
