Hello, we are looking at buying some small trees with tallish trunks to plant in large urns for a north facing patio area. What kind of plant would you recommend. Was thinking of maybe a topiary plant or something a bit more bushy that is reasonably hard wearing and doesn’t need too much watering. Be glad of some advice.

Hi Rhona, a north facing patio is normally warm/hot, so we would be concerned about looking for a plant that doesn’t require much watering. Obviously a “bushier” plant would require more regular watering as well. On the positive side a good large pot with a quality potting mix that has good water holding capacity will maintain a standard plant for a few years. Varieties to consider,a range of standard citrus from mandarin to kaffir lime, the traditional buxus and standard bay trees are also tough and hardy. Range can vary from store to store, it would be best to call into your local store to check current availability. Thanks, the Palmers team
