Main shaping of your Grape vine should be done in winter, when not in leaf. Summer thinning can help improve fruit quality and allows light in to ripen the fruit. Grapes fruit on growth made the previous year, so heavy prunning may affect this coming seasons crop. The main objective is to create a framework of shortened main stem wood and side rods that should be pruned back to about 50cm. Thin rods that are too close to allow about 50cm gaps between each of these side rods. Laterals growing from these side rods should be shortened to to within 2 or 3 buds. Grapes are tough and grow rapidly in spring and summer, so don’t be too concerned about reducing the size of your vine.
