We have just bought a house with a small back lawn that had ready lawn laid. The grass hasn’t taken to the soil and is extremely fine, even just light raking of garden leaves pulls up masses of grass. It’s like a mat sitting on top that doesn’t penetrate into the soil at all. Any ideas how we can fix it. We have had suggestions of killing it and starting again, can we just put new grass seed in and hope it thickens up?

Hi Eve, without seeing what is looks like it is hard to judge. It almost sounds like you are raking off grass that is already dead, but still maybe looks a bit green? In this case maybe something has been lying on top of the lawn which would have killed the ready lawn. It is unusual for a ready lawn just to die, what was it laid on? If you could try to find out what the reason was for the ready lawn to die, it would be easier to recommend a solution. We are hesitant to give you a suggested solution that potentially is a waste of time/money. Yes you could try just over sowing now (grass seed straight on top of existing, then a fine layer of lawn mix to cover the seed), there is no need to kill existing grass. Otherwise, feel free to take some photos and take them into your local Palmers store for more advice. Thanks, the Palmers team
