The root system of a silver birch usually extends out to the dripline, which is the most outer edge of the canopy. They are usually shallow which is why they can be a problem in an open lawn area. You could try installing a root barrier. Vercan Root Barrier which comes in a roll form to be placed vertically, below ground. It prevents tree roots. It is easy to install using either a narrow width excavator or spade, it is light, flexible and can be formed to fit anywhere you need it to go. It is the simple long term solution to prevent cracked paths, roads, pipes and damage to other utilities.
