I have small garden fly’s hovering around my back door, I can see nothing that is attracting them, I have a small wooden deck & a concrete carport, no plants or rubbish bins. It’s becoming quite a nuisance as I have to now keep my back door closed all the time, even putting the rubbish out. Would be grateful if you could advise.

Some plants are known to attract flies, so if they are settling on a particular plant you may have found your culprit. Trapping flies can help keep the population down, but can also be an ongoing unpleasant task. There is a plant known as ‘Shoo Fly’ (Nicandra physalodes) which is reported to work in this situation. Ask at your local Palmers store, although I don’t think it is available until spring.
