In the Autumn Garden – The Modern Day Gardener

Every year you learn more as a gardener, what you like, what you don’t like, what to do and when to do it and what not to do!

This year I really want to focus on growing foods that my household will get the most out of, selecting vegetables that we will actually eat.

The Edible Garden

The plan for our Autumn edible garden is peas, beans, broccoli, carrots, salad and leafy greens, garlic, the usual herbs (rosemary, thyme, parsley) and every kind of cauliflower you can imagine.

Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how you look at it), we’re not able to have raised beds and we don’t have any ground soil that we can touch as renters. Over the years we have slowly built up our collection of pots that are perfect for tomatoes in the summer and great for individual brassica in the winter months.

The Flower Garden

I have also been inspired by the Palmers container bulb garden which you can find here. It’s my first time working with bulbs so I’m sure some of it might be hit and miss but I’m very excited for early spring! I’ve picked Earlycheer daffodils (early spring), mixed hyacinth (mid spring) and mixed tulips (late spring). I’ve also popped some poppies in too and they’re coming away nicely.

At the end of the day, although our space is small we will always try to make the most of our space and try to grow as much as we can! There’s so much pleasure in growing and cooking your own food. If you don’t have the space for a vege patch, I highly recommend growing herbs in a small planter to get you started and go from there – that’s what I did!
