I recently moved to a new home which has some lovely citrus planted. They seem about 4 years old and are getting some TLC they may have missed out on. They have strawberry plants all around them. Is that wise? Should the strawberry plants be removed and let the citrus grow without fighting for nutrients, moisture etc? The same situation applies to some pip fruit trees as well

I have a small fig tree in my garden. I have a small (cross-lease) section and as I don’t want the tree to get too large I thought it would be good in a tub. Then I thought that if I sink the tub into the ground it would appear to take up even less room. But if I do this will the roots eventually find their ways out through the drainage holes thereby defeating the purpose of root restriction to keep it small? I thought I would also do same with a lemon.

I have espaliered apple trees which have what looks like cotton wool on parts of the main branches (not tips of branches) when I wipe this off with my fingers there seems to be brown granules or maybe they are small insects at the base of the fluff – what is this and what do you recomend as the best spray.

hi, we are planting our lifestyle block with fruit trees, natives etc… Most of the soil is clay and the area can be quite windy. Can you recommend any fruit trees that might grow successfully on the land? I am heading to palmers Whangarei at the weekend so I hope to pick some trees up? thanks.sarah.

I have planted strawberry plants into a large pot. I was told it’s good to put straw around the plants but then I read your shouldn’t let the straw touch the plant stems. Is this correct?

Hi I have had a mandarine tree for about 4 years. It fruits until a green stage and then dries out and doesn’t ripen.
Is it lacking something?

We have a lemon tree at our bach in Kinloch (West of Taupo) that fruits prolifically every year. This year however I’ve noticed that the lemons are actually quite ‘dry’ inside and really firm. They look perfect on the outside, and are quite big! I’m sorry I don’t know what sort of lemon they are. Any advice as to how to get juicy lemons back?

My orange tree is loaded but I notice that 3 oranges are striped . They look similar to a buttercup pumpkin stripes. I googled it, but couldn’t find anything. If you have an email, I could send you some pictures.

My strawberries are ripening nicely but it is a battle to get them before they are being eaten by what looks like millipedes. Any suggestions on what I can use to get rid of them?

Hi, can you please advise if I should trim long shooting branches to the size if the rest of the tree. My lemon tree has a couple of long reaching young branches and the rest of the branches are all about the same smaller size, it’s like I have 2 rogue branches!

There were 2 yellow leaves on my lemon plant. Apart from this, the plant is growing very well. When the plant was smaller, there were several bouts of yellow leaves surfacing. I treated it with the yellow leaf tonic. What appears to be the problem now? Only 2 leaves were yellow? Is it in need of the tonic again?

I have a 2year old Passion fruit plant. This year I only had one passion fruit. It has not grown as well as I would have expected even though I have fed it with blood & bone as well as sheep pellets. Years ago when I had this problem I used Bassic Slagg which I have not seen for years. Is there any other fertilzer I can use to may this vine grow & bare fruit? .
