We’ve got approx 60sq m of area that we have created after building a retaining wall. We filled it with broken up rotten rock and loose soil about 6mths ago. It’s packed down and settled and we want to plant grass seed. Good sun in area and typical Welly rainfall. Doesn’t have to be hard wearing. Wondering what to plant and how much. Any advice on how to break soil up appreciated. Access to section is tricky as is set down approx 10metres from road (stairs mainly).

Hello

Can I have some advice on what I could plant in a shelled garden that is low maintenance, at the moment we have some miniature flaxes which have take over the garden, I have found one plant I would like in there, but I want to put something that is low maintenance, thin leafed, I don’t want grasses as we have some and they now need to be pulled out. We live in Northland and have been in draught for last few years so it needs to be some hardy as well.

Many thanks

Hi
I have proposed a Spray Free Zone at our local playground, and I’m looking into options of how to manage the gardens there without using herbicide.

If you have any suggestions that would be great. In particular, any comments on the different brands of weed matting – in terms of their long term prevention of weeds (i know some brands are better than others).

Also if you have any comments about sprays that are organic, or have had any experience with non toxic Salt/Dishwash/Vinegar combos, or any hot steam systems.

Thanks

HI there,
I was wondering if anyone could give me advice or ideas for a hardy scrub or tree that could be planted on an ever eroding river bank? Our property backs onto a river bank which is slowly erroding. We have a fence lining the affected bank and there’s currently one section along that fence where the ground has all but fallen away leaving the fence with a gap at the bottom of it.
So we’d be interested to know what you would recommend.

Many Thanks

Hi there,

I’ve got a couple of trees at my house, and I love them, but I have no idea what they are.

I’d love to know, so I can learn how to look after and prune them.

I have a range of photos. How should I send them?

I want a climber, a hedge which I can keep clipped short and something either wide of a pathway, also two flowering specimen trees (could be fruit). also something to esplandier. All of these need to be flowering mid April 2014?

What type of plants would you recommend in a garden that gets very wet in the rain but when it is dry the area doesn’t retain moisture?

Hi,

I am looking for an evergreen climber to plant in a shaded area of my courtyard. I would prefer something that bears flowers. The courtyard does not get much sun. Im also wanting something that is fast growing.

Have a large ornamental in the middle of the roundabout of our driveway. Need a continuous planting around the base, height around 30cm, colour green and tidy compact plant. Area can be hot and dry, frost resistant. Nearby in the driveway have buxus hedging surrounding roses, and daphne as hedging.

I have a number of minature Toi Toi and understand they should be cut back in winter. However should the flowers be removed after flowering as mine are looking rather messy at present.

I live in the Waitakere Ranges and I am re-sowing my lawns from scratch. I would like to use Leptinella dioica for coverage and would like to know if this is readily available also would it be suitable in my area?
