Hello there, sorry I sent the other email accidentally.
Could you help me please, last year sometime I planted some sunflowers for my grandchildren and they were fabulous and grew really tall. I can’t remember which ones they were and when you should plant them. I would like to plant some more around their house.

Kind Regards
Maree Standen

When is the correct time to plant bulbs into pots – can all vareity of bulbs be planted at the same time or for example are daffodils planted at a different time to tulips. What is the best food to feed them and should this be done at planting time?

We have numerous Pinenut Trees growing. Would the Pine Needles be O’K for us to use on all our gardens (Vegetable & flower) for mulch or ground cover? If Yes, would we place them around while needles are dry, or wait until they have started to breakdown.

Is the right time to trim buxus? – mine have put on lots of fresh green growth over the last month or so and now look rather shaggy – is the new growth too fresh to trim?

Please can you let me know what’s happening to the Palmerston North Palmers store. I understood it was closing for a rebuild, but nothing’s been happening. The Facebook page says it closed permanently, is this correct. Thanks.

Hi,

I’m trying to identify a plant I saw around the estuary. It’s asparagus like in shape with sprays of yellow flowers that are hemlock like in shape.

I have a photo but can’t attach it here

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Carina

We recently ripped out an old garden of scrappy plants and replaced them with native plants and river stones but we have a rogue Peace Lily that keeps sprouting in one area. Is there anyway we can kill it without having to dig it out? Is there anything we can spray on it that wont kill the surrounding plants – the shoots are sprouting about 50-60cm away from the nearest native plant.

I am not a gardener at all. But have always loved fritillaries. Last year i bought a bulb, planted it (in the spring) in a medium sized plant pot, and waited. It came up, grew a ‘stick’ about 30cm tall but that is where it stopped. No flowers, nothing beyond this twig.

What did i do wrong? And what should I do with it now? It has stayed round the back of the house since then, unchanged. I would love to think there is still hope I may get a flower from it somehow.

Thanks for your help.

Hi I have a south facing garden with a wooden fence and a tree at one end. The shady end I have been able to get looking ok with shade plants but the other end gets very little sun in winter and lots in summer. I have a climbing rose, a lavendar, alstromeria. But all look tatty in winter. Can you recommend anything that would look good in winter? Would be happy to plant it all in small shrubs to get an attractive consistent look. I do water it in summer. Thanks

I have made what I think is good quality compost from my four bins. Pretty sure I got the right balance of nitrogenous/carboniferous material and it was fed with lime and blood and bone throughout, as well as added peat. I used it to pot up seedlings with variable success. Should I perhaps have mixed it with equal quantity of bought potting mix or is there a formula for making a satisfactory potting mix using homemade compost. Also, could I use it to part-fill troughs and planter boxers before filling up with a certified bought mix. Thanks

Hi,
Do any of your branches stock universal brackets for hanging troughs etc? I believe they come from Willow Avenue but I can’t order them privately.
Cheers

I have very large hydrangeas. During summer, the flowers decay and sag from the extreme weight. Should I prune them even though they are blossoming?
