I have a bottle brush in my front garden among some other lower growing plants like Mock Orange and a few hardy natives. The bottle brush is a bit sparse and open in the lower branches and I want to thicken it out as this planted area provides a screening effect from the street. What I am considering is whether an older variety climbing rose might be compatible in that garden environment? I want to make sure that if I did this that it won’t put Tui’s off from coming to the bottle brush flowers in the late spring?

I have grown sunflowers for the first time this year and am amazed at the wonderful results. Now that they are almost over when do I cut them down and what to do with the dinner plate size heads?
I would be grateful for any tips or suggestions regarding sunflowers. I think the seeds were annuals.
Many thanks.

Hydrangea problems. 1. About 6 weeks ago I bought a Hydrangea from Palmers, Greville rd. after a few days it was looking decidedly sick, starting to droop, and what flowers were on it started dying. I kept it reasonably moist in this dry weather watering it regularly (it is in a bark garden) now it has wilted drastically & the leaves are turning Brown. 2. I have had another Hydrangea for about a year, a few moths ago it started to lose its compactness & open out. it is also not flowering

I have a lot of slaters in my orchard and garden. But they are causing a problem with my tamorillo trees. They are eating away the main trunk and everywhere they can fit into little nocks on the main trunk. When I flick them out there are heaps of them in just little spaces. I have tried putting concrete rings around the trees to stop growth around the base of the trees but they are still coming. Not as many as before the rings but still quite a few. How can I get rid of them?

I have a new house with a large established garden including fruit plants, flowering shrubs, trees, ferns, hedges, succulents, herb garden etc. If I bought a different fertilser for each it would be very expensive. Can you give me an idea of a few basic fertilsers that should cover the whole garden?
