I have a camellia tree (Camellia E.G.Waterhouse) that about 2 years ago sent us this long very tall branch from what looked like the middle of it. However now that it has a bit more girth I see it has actually come from the side base. Its leaves are a very similar shape but slightly narrower. The bushy part of the camellia has flower buds coming but this top part has no flowers and is much more open with its branch structure up the trunk.
Is there some reason for this type of camellia to shoot like that from the base i.e. underground? I could send photos if that would help .

Thanks,
Wendy

I received Palmers latest email bulletin today. It contains good advice about bringing up Monarch butterflies. However the bulletin says nothing about the Monarchs major enemy – the social wasp. It is impossible to raise Monarchs now as the wasp eats all the eggs and caterpillars. I have been caring for Monarchs for over 30 years and I have seen the problem get progressively worse.

I bought a Casimiroa tree at Palmers at Highland Park some years ago. Finally this season it flowered and set fruit. However, when the fruit got to be about 2cms in size, they dropped off. What would have caused the fruit to drop off?

Our cat is eying the roof of our relocated greenhouse from the top of the fence beside it. If she jumps onto it, she will go through the green meshed plastic as disastrously as last winter’s winds did. After spending a while afternoon repairing it (with very $$$ tape) I am eager for ideas, from gardeners who also have had cat problems in parts of the garden, or from Palmers staff, please?

I have at least 20 caterpillars savaging my snow plant and at this rate, I soon won’t have a plant left…..

I am looking to remove them to a home made housing / aquarium but I don’t want to cause them harm, has anyone experienced this previously and got good results?

I live in Katikati on an orchard and have 4 cherry trees. 3 are close together on a sheltered site, 1 is standing alone in a different area. All around Katikati cherry trees are in flower but mine are looking bare apart from 1 small clump of flowers on the stand alone tree and 2 small clumps on 1 of the 3 which are close together. they appear to have tips of growth but difficult to tell if these will be leaves or flowers. Last year they had patchy flowers. they are about 15+ years old.
