I have a well established Rhodo (unknown name) – this year it produced buds that did not develop into flowers and the leaves are going dark brown at the tips. there is a very slight possibility that it got a little bit of poison into its system as I used some on nearby convolvulus. If so how do I nurse it back to health?

I grew tulips for the 1st time this year and they were gorgeous!

Do I lift the bulbs out once they have finished and store for next year or are they best left in soil? What do I need to do to keep the bulbs healthy for next year?

Thanks
Andrea (1st time tulip grower)

We have some distinct yellow patches in our lawn which don’t look like general dryness. We have an automated sprinkler on the lawn every second day, so it shouldn’t be dry. Do you think it may be grass grub or porina?

I have these great hydrangea bushes, but unfortunately they haven’t blossomed these recent years. So, this spring I’ve watered it heaps, and have added some fertiliser, and a couple of their leaves have started turning yellow, should I be worried? And do you have any advice to make hydrangeas blossom again? Thanks heaps!

Hi there

My large geranium has become half brown, from the inside out. Its become covered in white fly. Should I chop it right back and/or just treat the fly?

Hi there!
Would be grateful for some advice regarding my less-than-thriving akeake, and a few other trees!

Last winter I planted a range of native trees and flaxes along a sunny west facing fence line in Lower Hutt, many of which don’t seem to be doing well, particularly the akeake which has sparse brittle leaves. I had wondered whether the soil was too dry as there is a sharp dip behind the fence line where I think some of the water (and soil!) runs down, as well as my mapou and muehlenbeckia astonii showing yellowing leaves. However, I read that akeake tends to thrive in dry, poor soils! Any clue as to what may be happening and how to remedy it? The soil looked in poor condition when we moved into the property but we dug through plenty of organic material a good 6 months before planting and did some basic sheet mulching. The same types of trees which we planted in the front yard at the same time are thriving, so I don’t think it’s anything to do with climate.

Thanks so much!

Hi, A few days ago I bought a pohutukawa in a pot (species called Maori Princess) from Palmers in Bethlehem, Tauranga. It’s going to be our inside Xmas tree and we will plant it out in the garden after Xmas. My question is, how often should I water it in its pot inside to stay healthy? Thanks so much for your help and Merry Xmas!

I had two lovely conifers in my garden but they both went brown and had to pull them out, also another one is going brown. Why do they do this, I thought they were an everlasting tree? I am thinking of planting more, so some good advice would be helpful thanks.

Hello
Do you have any advice how I can perk up my lapageria? It consists of a few spindly vines with a few leaves on them. It does flower, Aprox 6 flowers each year. I would love to see it healthy and a mass of vines and glossy leaves.
Many thanks

I purchased 3x Photina Red Robin standards in October, planted them in pots on the same day and have treated all 3 in the same manner since purchasing.

Problem is… 2 are thriving and 1 looks to be dead and lost all its leaves this week! If new to gardening and these weren’t cheap so I’d like to know if a 66% success rate with your plants is good/normal or not???? I might need to rethink my new hobby!

My Camellia is over 15 years old. Grows beautifully anddoes not bloom. The 2 years it bloomed it was a double bloom hidden deep inside the bush. That was over 7 years ago.

Good Afternoon,

Over the last 6 – 12 months my lemon tree which was a thriving bushy green tree with lots of lemons has become a very sad looking tree. A lot of the branches are brown, have stripped their greenery and there hasn’t been any new growth for a long time. The leaves are yellow

I have used Epsom salts, sheep pellets and seasol with no impact. There was a lots of avids and bugs on the tree 12 months ago and so I gave it a dose of conqueror oil.

I did dig down to the roots and they appeared wet so I pulled back the soil and let it dry out.

Next to the lemon tree is a lime tree and that is large, bushy, green and growing really well. A few branches stripped their greenery but it is growing back

What do you suggest for the lemon tree – will it ever recover? Does it need to be pruned?

Many Thanks,
James

We have a 16 year old, 6 metre tall pohutukawa which has never flowered. It is on clay soil, in full sun. I have sprayed it for bugs. There are other trees near it which flower prolifically – a bottlebrush, feijoa (which produces enormous, juicy fruit), rosemary, and a wild cherry.
I have had differing answers when I have asked how to get flowers – fertilise (Osmacote, native garden, Seasonal), don’t ever fertilise; prune, don’t ever prune; more water, less water.
It would be lovely if this big tree would flower!
We are in Wanganui.

Thanks
Sue

PS. Our kauri tree has 2 cones!

Our garden is infected with phytophthera I think. I have had sudden death of daphne, golden nugget frangipani, box hedge, velvet and cream magnolia, scleranthes and boronias. The literature explains about how the fungus moves through water and how important drainage is. My garden sits on clay. Are there any companion plants that discourage fungal attacks? I still have surviving plants of each of the plants that were hit, I am spraying with foscheck and sometimes copper.
