I have a Clivia miniata planted into the soil in a shaded ( no sun) corner of the garden which has orange/ brown spots here and there on it’s leaves and edges of leaves. What is the cause of this and how can I put it right. This is it’s first year, when can I expect it to bloom ? I always make sure there is plenty of snail bait around it as I know that they love them.

In my new property I have inherited a large protea which is flowering well, but it is very scraggly and has some dead or dying areas. How can I prune it to get it to bush out without destroying it all together?

We have three Karaka trees on our front lawn – not sure how old they are. They keep dropping yellow leaves and some have brown spots on them as well. The middle tree doesn’t appear to drop as many as the two outside ones. Is this normal?

I have a real problem with slugs and snails, and have 2 cats and a dog, which I don’t want to poison with normal slug bait. Is there an alternative solution?

Hi there, I have some dwarf hebes planted up my driveway and most of them have gone a very light green, bordering on yellow. When we planted them, we noticed there was a lot of white clumps in the soil which we think could be limestone from the driveway preparation, some 20 years ago. The area where there are a couple of hebes that have grown well and are still dark green, had far less of the white clumps in the soil. I had one hebe die completely within a few weeks of being planted so I just thought that was bad luck…. however I have since noticed this yellowing and no new growth of the remaining hebes (except for the couple closest to the house end of the driveway where there wasn’t as much of this limestone-looking stuff). I had put the lack of growth down to it being winter, but since there are a couple which are way bigger and darker green than the others, when they started off the same, I’m thinking it is to do with the soil.
Is there something I could spray on the plants to fix the soil so that my hebes can get better and grow normally? Or something else I could try?
Thanks for your help!

Earwigs, I have them in my dahlias, my roses, under plant pots, even the odd one ventures inside! Only method I find to get rid of a few is rolled up paper and check the traps every morning to get rid of them. I try not to have anything that will encourage them but they are so hard to get rid of! So tired of having my flowers chewed to tatters.

I had two lovely conifers in my garden but they both went brown and had to pull them out, also another one is going brown. Why do they do this, I thought they were an everlasting tree? I am thinking of planting more, so some good advice would be helpful thanks.

Hi

I have a 20 year old tropical Frangipani tree that I wish to transplant to the new house we have just moved into. We are still in Mt.Maunganui. How do I go about it, in order to minimise the risk of losing the tree? It’s very precious to me.

I would be very grateful for any advice you are able to give me.

I’ve discovered my string of pearls has mealy bugs! After some research online, I first treated it with a spray of water, dish soap and crushed garlic. It seemed to get rid of some bugs but not all. I have also read that repotting a plant with mealy bugs is a good idea, but because string of pearls is so delicate, I am worried I will damage it even more.

What should I do! Would an insecticide be best, and which one should I use?

Thanks in advance,
Charlotte

Hi,
I purchased two gardenia’s off you recently. And was wondering how regularly I should be feeding them, and with what… I’m guessing with sulphate of potash, but would like more accurate knowledge.

Thanks,
Lisa

It has 1 head and has been been looking good until now, it has just flowered this summer, the flower is dying and now all the leaves seem to be dropping off. Im not sure if I need to cut off the flower, the top of the tree or do nothing.

I have a passionfruit plant that is growing over the fence between our house and my neighbours. When I walk down the fence line, hundreds of small browny coloured moth type insects fly everywhere. What are these insects, and how do I stop them from sitting all over my passionfruit?
