I have pots of parsley and thyme and they have what looks like someone has been spitting on them ! It washes off easily but comes back again. I can’t see any creatures on there.

I am an avid Auckland (Howick) gardener, but cannot grow garlic successfully. I use shop bought Printatur bulbs, planted in June, have changed the sites. I prepared the site with composite and kept them weed free. I planted them root down, covered them with 2-3cm soil.

This year the plants grew strongly with relatively no disease, however when harvested they had no bulbs. They just looked like Spring Onions. Such a disappointment! I would greatly appreciate any ideas.

I have several veges in pots and there are mushrooms growing around in the compost. There appears to be several different varieties. Is it still safe to eat the veges, and what do I use to get rid of them?

We have some old boxed garden beds that we want to plant into vegetables but they are full of weeds, is there a product that kills the weeds but doesn’t require removal of the dead weeds before it is safe to plant? I.e that we can mulch the dead stuff into the soil and then plant?

Campari Tomatoes: I have these in 80cm high containers (1 in each) they sit on white limestone chip. Will snails get to these? How tall will these grow, and I have a large stake in each container. Will these grow the same as a normal tomatoe ie beefsteak etc.? Or should they be espaliered? I am watering each day, and they are growing at the rate of 1cm per day.

I was tying my tomato plant to the stake and broke off the top part of the plant, I had just taken out the little laterals before this. Is there any hope for my plant now?

Hi, I planted a rhubarb last summer and everything I read said not to harvest the first years crop but to let it die back over winter to feed the root stock. I did this even though my plant was a triffid. It’s now spring and my plant us still quite large.should I cut it all back to allow for new growth or should I leave it.
Cheers TJ

Hi the tomatoes that I planted out some weeks ago the leaves have started to curl on the new growth, I have had this happen before last year. This year I have planted in a different location, both times in tomato potting mixture, last year in the normal garden, this year in large boxes. Can you tell me what is the cause of this.

Thank you

Hi,

I have some mystery cardoon/artichoke plants that have sprouted in my garden and I’m unsure if I should try and blanch the stems to eat, or wait for globes to grow to eat as artichokes.

Is there any simple way to tell the difference between a cardoon and a globe atrtichoke so I know what to do with them?

I planted beans this year and have got good growth in leaves but no flowers at all. Other people I have spoken to have got beans that they are picking and I have yet to see a flower? I planted them in a sunny, well drained area

I have had some Jersey Bennies certified seed potatoes chitting since early July. I put them outside in the light but not direct sunlight. They eventually grew dark sprouts about 1cm long, but these have not grown noticeably for about the last month. Why aren’t they sprouting a bit more enthusiastically? When should I plant them?
