A blackbird steals my ripe cherry tomatoes! I tried hanging CDs and pieces of string, but it didn’t work. It would be too expensive to have netting over the whole area. Is there a way to scare blackbirds, a plant they don’t like the smell of? Something natural that wouldn’t hurt them, but it would let me have my tomatoes!

What is the difference between compost and garden mix, I need to fill a rose garden which I will add some vegetables to in places and I have read compost can be too strong for some plants to be directly planted into?

I just bought 2 plants in punnets tomatoes and capsicum. Now before i could have a chance to put them into the garden i had to leave them in their punnets for a week without watering. Now they have turned brown, crispy brown. So what i did i have added water and discarded all the dry leaves from the punnet and have put the pots on some wet soil. What i want to know is will the plant recover and grow. What more can i do to help them.

Hi,
I have recently moved house and discoveredin the dark depths of the shed old fertiliser that has turned to ush in the bags, mostly standard NPK and some fruit tree fert. I was wondering whether it OK/worthwhile chucking in the compost? Or is there something else I should be doing with it?

I can’t use it eaily in the way it was deisgned but seems a waste to just chuck it….

Thanks for any ideas or knowledge

There are wee white mites flying around my kitchen herb garden; are they causing any harm and can be ignored, or should I ‘eradicate’ and with what?

Hi there,
I have been looking for an alternative to derris dust as I have tutu children and also not enough patience for continually re-applying the already nuisance derris dust. I came across a product called Dipel and was wondering if you stock it or know of anyone that might. I couldn’t find it on the mitre10 and bunnings websites. Also is there any chance of online shopping on your site?
Kind regards
Richard

Hi there
I was wondering if you have a product that will control earwigs in the garden..
They sit in the bottom of the stalks of the silver beet I think they eat it also..
I would love to find something that would sort this issue out.
Thank you

It is in a high raised garden .There is no sign of snails or slugs . Do birds eat veg? If it was a possum it would leave more damage I think BUT WHO???

Club root is in parts of our garden. I’ve read many websites, all suggesting there’s no short fix, taking 7-20 years for soil to be ‘renewed’. We have stopped growing brassicas in affected areas of the garden. Do you have any suggestions to improve the affected soil?

With thanks
Teresa

I sowed seeds about a month ago. I kept in light airy room till seedlings came through but for the past 2 weeks I have had all the seed trays on my garden table Day and night. I covered in clear plastic to start with but now I don’t bother. They all seem ok and with this lovely weather 65oc in day and 45 at night I thought they would be ok. Am I doing long term damage or will they be ok if I continue leaving them out at night. I’m in Northwood Middlesex… if it was to start to rain heavy I would cover or if temp was to drop lower at night I would also cover x
