A blackbird steals my ripe cherry tomatoes! I tried hanging CDs and pieces of string, but it didn’t work. It would be too expensive to have netting over the whole area. Is there a way to scare blackbirds, a plant they don’t like the smell of? Something natural that wouldn’t hurt them, but it would let me have my tomatoes!

Why don’t you have Agria potatoes listed in the current newsletter about potatoes. It is very common and a lovely all-round potato. Is this a mistake or deliberate?

Hi there,
I have been looking for an alternative to derris dust as I have tutu children and also not enough patience for continually re-applying the already nuisance derris dust. I came across a product called Dipel and was wondering if you stock it or know of anyone that might. I couldn’t find it on the mitre10 and bunnings websites. Also is there any chance of online shopping on your site?
Kind regards
Richard

I planted new asparagus last year. Do I cut last years old ferns off? New asparagus are coming through now. Do I cut them off too and wait for the new ones in Spring? What do I feed the plants now and also do I put sheep pellets round them? Can the new spears be used and eaten this year or do I have to wait another year or so?
Thank you for your advice in advance.
Regards
Sue

Some of my asparagus crowns which are 4 yr old plants which are about the size of a small saucer are rock hard , and the new shoots are unable to penetrate through, and if they do shoot around there outside of the crown they have brown scales.

What can I do

What’s a good fertilser to use for asparagus? I had a receipe mix years ago but can remember where I put it. It had a mix by volume of urea, potash and phospate. Any suggestion?

I am growing an avocado seed in a jar of water. The root has sprouted to about 7cm. Today it was knocked and about 3.5cm of root was snapped off. Will the plant continue to grow, as it is germinating will it go into shock?

Can you please tell me which is the best soaker hose to purchase? I have a split garden and need a good soaker hose for the vegetables and the ones i have got previously do not last very long, they tend to perish in the sun.

I have a builtup vegetable garden growing garlic, lettuce dwarf beans, silverbeet and bootroot – I am having trouble with ants in a big way with masses of black aphids on the garlic leaves and lettuce leaves – which would be the best way of erradicating these. I have tried sprinkling granules of ant killer around the garden as I know these encourage aphids. Hoping you can help.
