Hi Gillian,

Petunias are perennials given the right climate. Petunias like mild winters and will not tolerate frosts so you can keep them going but a lot of people prefer to treat them as annuals just as this is the easier option.

If you were thinking of keeping them over winter, chopping them back is often good practice as well as keeping them in a warm location and protecting them from frost. I have had success in keeping a few pots of mine year after year.
