Hi Margaret,

An avocado tree has both male and female flowers on the same tree but they open at different times. The female flowers open and then they close and soon after the male flowers will open and close.

Although you may still get fruit by just planting one, if you have the space it helps to plant two for improved pollination. Planting a type (A) tree such as Hass with a type (B) tree such as Feurte is recommended as the male flowers on one tree will open at the same time as the female flowers on the other tree. They compliment each other.

I hope this answers your question. Best of luck.
