Can one grow Avocado Trees and get a reasonable yield of fruit from them in Howick? Are Hass Avocado Trees worth planting?

Hi Trevor,

Yes, I think Howick would be a good location to grow an Avocado tree. The further North Avocados are grown the better as they prefer warmer environments.
The tree needs protection from strong wind and frost and good drainage is a must. Plenty of room is required.
if you are growing a grafted specimen it may take up to 3 years to produce fruit, a seeded specimen will take many more years to produce fruit. One tree should be enough for the home gardener for a reasonable yield but you can put in another variety to help pollinate the Hass if you are worried.

Good Luck.
