I have a new house with a large established garden including fruit plants, flowering shrubs, trees, ferns, hedges, succulents, herb garden etc. If I bought a different fertilser for each it would be very expensive. Can you give me an idea of a few basic fertilsers that should cover the whole garden?

You could probably get away with general purpose fertiliser, blood and bone, an acid loving fertiliser for camellias etc and a citrus fertiliser if you have any citrus trees. Sheep pellets are a great all round product too.
