If a plant has been left for awhile and looks dead, can it still survive and grow?

You need to establish whether or not it is actually dead. Does it have any leaves on it? If not, you need to see whether or not it is still alive by cutting off a small piece of the stem or branch and having a look at the colour inside. If it has any green, then there is still some life left. If its brown and snaps easily (like a dry twig would) then it is dead. Alternatively, you could water it and see what happens.
