I have a Clematis Montana which after growing vigorously over a timber frame approx 5 months in the ground has now withered and seems to have died. This is the second one in the same spot

It sounds like they have succumbed to clematis wilt. If your plant only died partly back, you could cut it back to that point, as it may possibly come away again. However if that’s not the case it wouldn’t be a good idea to plant another in the same spot, unless you treat the soil with something like Basamid.
