Why do at least half of my daffodils stop flowering after their first year? They put up lots of leaves but no flowers, they look like giant spring onions! some are in containers, some in the garden, I feed them all with bulb food. Garden soil is heavy but the container soil should be fine for them.
thanks

Hi Alison,
Often, if your bulbs are putting are up only green foliage there is too much nitrogen in the fertiliser, but in your case if you have used bulb fertiliser that shouldn’t be the case. Once finished flowering, ensure you let the foliage die down completely before cutting it off, then remove the bulbs from the ground and store in a dry garden shed or similar. Before planting again in the following autumn, place the bulbs in the fridge for at least 6 weeks, this should help initiate the flower.
Thanks, the Palmers Team
