I have heard some people fertiliser their gardens with bits of fish, bones and all i.e. whatever is left over after cutting of the fillets. Is this effective, and is it safe for vegetable gardens?

Fish fertiliser or emulsion is a good liquid fertiliser, and should be safe for vegetable gardens – so long as the produce is washed thoroughly before use. It is made by putting the remains in a large container of water and stirring every now and then. After a couple of days, the remains are removed and the liquid used.
