I bought 3 peony corms last year and one grew moderate amount of greenery, one a small quantity which died off soon after and one never emerged – I didn’t expect them to flower the first year, but expected more signs of life. This year the healthier one has just come through. Is there anything I can do to help things along? I’m reluctant to buy more as they’re a very expensive plant! I had prepared the ground well before initial planting.

Hi Diana, They are not easy to grow and need a cold climate (frosty winter to do well. They will also need a well-draining soil and will struggle in heavy soils. Possibly the one that has come up might be the only one that will as they others might have rooted away over winter. I wouldn’t go overboard with fertiliser at this stage, A good Mulch around them will be beneficial, Correct they will take 2 years to get some flower.

Thanks the Palmers Team
