I bought a Crown Jewel Gardenia last November, full of beautiful white blooms with very healthy foliage. The white blooms slowly yellowed & fell off … but many of the leaves also yellowed & dropped. It’s now half the size it was & the foliage looks very sparse & sick.

I’ve tried feeding it Nitrosol, watered it with Epsom Salts, moved it around into different spots … full sun, partial sun & also total shade. The plant tag reads ‘an easy & reliable evergreen Gardenia’. What am I doing wrong? I would appreciate your help.

Thanks,
Jane

Hi Jane, Possibly it’s been over potted (pot too big for the plant) causing the pot to be too wet (gardenia don’t like a cold wettish soil) although they do like a good mulch. Gardenia are not easy to grow especially in pots. I would suggest you down pot the plant (smaller pot) (if still worth it) as the plant hasn’t got a lot of foliage and going into winter month it will require very, very little watering (if any!) Re planting can cause damage so it is possible that it might not survive a re-pot.

Thanks the Palmers Team
