We planted 4 ornamental grapes in late spring by the corner posts of our veranda pergola. They are flourishing but sending out laterals and shoots into nearby bush roses. How do we train these young vines up the posts..do we prune back the laterals/shoots now to enable the stronger cane to run up the post? How short do we prune back the shoots/laterals?
I would appreciate any advice you could offer.
Many thanks

Hi Annabel,

The vines need to be pruned each winter when dormant, but you can do some pruning now especially if they are getting away and into the rose bushes. Your right, the idea is that you want the plant to put more energy into the leader until it is up and over your pergola.

Here is an excellent link for pruning grapes over pergolas.

All the best.
