Melons fruit with a lot of sun so a shady place will struggle to ripen the fruit that sets. Grow your melons in a sunny open position for good air flow in well drained soil. Prepare your bed to be slightly acidic that can be adjusted with Dolomite purchased from your local Palmers. Good amounts of compost and a little blood and bone will get them started well. If you are struggling to find a sunny spot in your garden then look for a short runner variety from your garden store and you will be able to grow this in a large pot.
