For your ideas on my michelia figo. It turned out to be borer which killed one branch and is affecting several others. I have removed the dead branch, and treated any obvious or possible borer holes on sick branches (borer spray direct into the holes). Apart from a feed to support the general health of the plant, is there anything else I should do? Would a general insecticide spray of all the branches and trunks be of any benefit – now or later in the year when bugs might fly?

it sounds like you are doing all the right things to treat the borer. For the general on-going health of the tree you can feed with compost or well-rotted cow manure. Prune after flowering to encourage new flowering growth.
