What is the best way to get nets over quite large fruit trees,i.e.plums or pears, to prevent the fruit being eaten by birds? What other successful ways are there to deter birds?

Hi Lynn,
Unfortunately there is no easy solution. The best way to net a fruit tree is as it grows, place four posts around the tree and attach the netting to the posts and adjust as it grows. For a more permanent solution people often create fruit growing cages.
You can simply drape the netting over the tree but birds often get through the netting if not placed on a structure. It may protect some of your fruit though so would be worth a try.
Other ideas are buying bird scare tape, creating bird scare flags with shiny material on a bamboo post, old CDs or making a scarecrow. Some people even put plastic bags over the fruit as they emerge.
Good luck 🙂
