I was expecting my Swift potatoes to be ready for Christmas but they have already died off. Will they still be “new” potatoes if I leave them or should they be dug now ? There seems to be a good crop of good sized spuds underneath.

Hi Jocelyn,

New potatoes or early varieties do not last as long as some of the other varieties. I think you would be safe to leave them for only a few extra weeks at most and then that really depends on the weather we have been having.

With all the rain, you just want to make sure the potatoes won’t rot. It is such unfortunate spring weather we have been having!

Swift potatoes are one of the earliest varieties, only requiring 90 days to be ready for harvest, once harvested they are best eaten fresh and not stored.
