I have a really big Oak Tree growing in our garden, it is probably 25 years old, but it has a black coating on the bark, trunk and branches in the winter it washes off on to the plants underneath, can I treat this or is it ok just to leave??

The black coating you describe sounds like Black sooty mould. Yates Bug Oil controls the sucking insects that produce honeydew on which sooty mould grows. So I would recommend you treat the tree to control.
