Is it possible to plant under magnolia trees and if so what plants would be good. I would like to put in a low raised bed (e.g. one level of retaining wall block) under a large magnolia tree in my garden as at the moment it is just dirt & weeds.

Planting under your magnolia will look lovely. Shallow rooting ground cover that looks nice is either the NZ native Elatostema with it’s red brown leaves and purple delicate flowers are nice if a shaded area. Ajuga has bold blue flowers spikes in spring and summer. Bulbs and annuals also look pretty beneath. Magnolias are shallow rooters so the trick is to not plant deep rooting plants or there will be competition for food.
