We’re building a new house. There is a built-in wooden planter box in the central courtyard. As the deck is a metre off the ground, we’ll need a lot of “fill” in the box. Can you advise how we layer the contents? Perhaps clay and gravel, topsoil, then planting mix? It will get morning sun in summer, mainly shade the rest of the time.

Hi Sue, In regards to filling the planter box, you can use some hard fill (rocks stones, scoria , gravel etc.) for the bottom 30-40cm the remainder can be filled with a mixture of the soil types mentioned above (clay, topsoil, garden mix and vege mix) as long as you use similar quantities of them all. The concern however is the lack of Sun, the success of what you plant will depend on how long the sun will shine in this position and general light level. (i.e. veges etc. might not work and you might need to use more shade loving plants). But time will tell.

Thanks the Palmers team
