I’m looking for some good plants to place under a totara in our garden in a ‘wilderness’ area that I want to give a semi-native look. I’ve seen something with big shiny green leaves but i believe it could be invasive – acanthus mollis? Should I avoid this?

Hi Andrea
acanthus mollis can be a bit invasive and so can fatsia japonica; however if you are able to control these they may be an option for you. Mix with clivia for flowering colour if frost free or ligularia reniformis if frost a problem (these tropical shaped leaves are frost hardy and flower yellow in winter).
Happy gardening
