Rhubarb needs rich soil and full sun, or at least sun for half a day. When planting add lots of nitrogen rich fertiliser and compost. Keep rhubarb well watered but ensure its in a well drained position. Rhubarb can be grown in large pots so long as its watered frequently. Leaves can be harvested from the outside as soon as there are at least 5 new shoots unfurling in the middle of the plant. Stems are picked by pulling each stem down and twisting off sideways from the main stem. The intensity of the redness is often better in cooler climates, but the colour does not seriously affect the taste or quality of the stems. Any flowers that are formed should be removed. As the plant prepares for winter mulch it with manure and compost to prepare the plant for spring and to help protect it from winter frosts. The root base can be divided every couple of years.
