Hi Linda, The best way I have always found is to remove the spent flower heads (break them out) This way it encourages new growth and will have multiple flowerings per year. If heavy pruning is required I would do one side of the plant first, wait for new growth and then do the other side (with heavy pruning try to catch the growing season (spring /autumn).
