Hi,
Please can you advise best time to cut back a mandarin tree. It’s old, has had borer, & not doing too well. Also need to shape hedging camellias as well as some pohutakawa varietals.
many thanks,
Lorraine.

Hi Lorraine, With mandarins you would prune straight after fruiting and sometimes summer trimming is also required if a lot of new growth has appeared. Also remove any dead wood and cut out areas affected by borer. Ensure a pruning paste is applied on any cuts. Camellias you would prune straight after flowering, Pohutakawa also straight after flowering, if pruned at other times you might remove some of the foliage that would produce flowers next year.
Thanks the Palmers Team
