I am new to vegetable gardening but have a small raised garden bed which I have put compost and vege garden mix in layers getting ready for vegie planting. DO I need to add pea straw to the top layer to prevent slugs and maintain moisture for the plants over spring and summer?

Hi Mandy, Pea straw will help prevent weed growth and keep moisture in over the summer months so definitely will be helpful especially later in the season. Right now you might need to do lots of forking the soil to dry up the soil a bit! Concerned about having “layers” of compost and garden mix you would be better to mix the two together rather than layers. Thanks the Palmers Team
