The last two years the flowers are no longer red and seem to have turned into a more common variety. What would have caused this? It is a Red Vulcan Magnolia.

At some stage in a Magnolia’s life for an unknown reason the tree may flush pale flowers early in the season but usually later in season their true colours come forth. It sounds like your tree may be deficient in nutrients though since this has happened over the last two years. Give the tree a good feed now and see how it flowers later in the season. Is the rest of the tree looking happy? If it looks poorly it may have a disease of the roots. Try feeding first. Hope this helps.
