Is it correct that at this time of the year if you don’t dead head roses and leave them to form rose hips does the bush then go into hibernation, so that it thinks growing time is over and will put the effort into the plant and produce more after prunning time in July for the next season.

Hi Pat, The colder weather will initiate the Rose going into “hibernation”, leaving them alone to get the Rose hips just ads a bit of colour for the winter, without harming the plant. You are correct that pruning should be done in July. Ensure you have a good spraying programme in place for the time before and after pruning. (enspray oil, Free flow copper (and Lime sulphur if required).
