I am planning to convert some of my lawn into a wildflower meadow. I understand Yellow Rattle is the secret weapon to prevent the grass coming back and taking over, as it has a parasitic relationship with grass. I haven’t been able to source Yellow Rattle in NZ, so was wondering if there is a similar plant available here?

Hi Sue
Thanks for your message. I have had great success with either sheeting the ground with an impermeable cover like polythene for three months prior to sowing. this chokes the grass and then with ongoing spot weeding as the wildflowers die down keeps the grass at bay.
Your other option is to remove the grass area or make seed bombs from soil mixed with seeds and thrown onto a grassy area or bank/roadside.
Happy gardening
