My cabbage tree which I purchased about 4 months ago has started to get yellow leaves. These leaves are at the base of the plant. I have cut them off. What is the reason for this. (Plant is growing in a pot.) Thanks

Hi Linda,

Cabbage trees naturally tend to shed their leaves at the base of the plant from time to time. You should be able to just pull them off or as you said snip them off for a tidy up.

Things to ensure with cabbage trees:

  • Good drainage in the soil, the mix is not too heavy.
  • Water at the base of the plant- if too much moisture gets in the centre of the plant they are prone to the likes of mealybug.

You can give the cabbage tree a boost to the foliage with a liquid fertiliser such as Tui Organic Seaweed Plant Tonic. If you liquid feed once every week to two weeks this will green up the leaves.
